Can monkeys claim copyright infringement for their self portrait photos? It is a legal question I cannot even begin to answer despite all of the copyright classes I took in school.
So why even bring it up? Because it is an interesting legal dilemma especially when you factor in who took the photo (presumably the monkey) + who owns the camera (David Slater the nature photographer) + the laws of Indonesia + the regulations/rules of the National Park in Indonesia. Too much of a legal conundrum for me, but I can certainly enjoy the photos which are pretty funny.
Is it just me or does that monkey make you grin too?
Note: Although I really wanted to, I did not repost the photos here because despite the current debate on copyright ownership… someone does own the rights to these photos. I say donate some or all of the profits to the park reserve, the monkey has bills to pay too.
